Can’t transfer domain name from old webhost

To occasions this week I have had the situation where clients can’t contact their old web host to get their .co.uk domain name transferred

One is a live client, so I can’t say any more. The other was a replacement window fitter’s website where they couldn’t get in contact with the person who registered and set-up their old website and took on the services of another web design company to set-up another website, on a new domain name. Searching on google always brings up their old website, which has out-of-date contact details on (my emails to them bounced).

I suggested to the window fitter that he tries to get hold of his old domain name via Nominet. To do this requires a few steps to force through a transfer of registrar via Nominet.

Gain control of the management account for the domain in Nominet. To do this requires that you provide sufficient evidence that you have the right to take control of this account

Nominet provide an easy way for business owners to do this and is called re-establishing your identity which costs £12. Follow the wizard online and provide them with whatever information they require to prove that you are the rightful owner of the domain name

Once you have access to the account for your domain name you can then initiate a change of registrar, from your old, non-contactable host, to your new webhost. This costs, £10. If you have a load of names to transfer, it is still £10 as they perform the operation in bulk

Once you have done the above you should in theory have your old domain with all its SEO, google link juice and number one position and be able to 301 redirect old pages onto new ones
