This is not immediately obvious, as there is no built-in GUI for managing fonts in Xubuntu 11.10.
1. Open Thunar in sudo
2. Copy and paste your downloaded font(s) into the relevant folder, this example is using a truetype folder, but this could also be Opentype etc
3. Re-build the font cache
sudo fc-cache -f
