My first placement was with a niche market magazine publisher building new, and maintaining existing sites designed to push magazine subscriptions. I have a BA in Product Design and the skills learnt whilst on the degree are transferable to web design and development. For managing websites we use CMS Made Simple which is a Content Management System (CMS). It is a mature piece of software and has a very active community. It is very search engine friendly out of the box and is highly customisable. Other tools include, phpBB, vbulletin, oscommerce and WordPress.
