WordPress 3.2 upgrade – Insufficient Requirements. PHP4, PHP5, MySQL4, MySQL5

Tuesday, June 21st, 2011

When trying to upgrade your WordPress install to the latest version 3.2, you may encounter the following message

When you try to upgrade wordpress on a server that is running PHP and MySQL versions 4 and not versions 5 you may get the following message “Insufficient Requirements”. There are some workarounds but first you should check with your current host as to whether they support PHP/MySQL 5, if they do kindly ask them to enable your hosting account for them.

If not you have a few options. For this example I will use 1and1 shared hosting which is renowned for it’s incompatibility. If you don’t know what versions of PHP and MySQL you are using with your existing WordPress install or whether you can upgrade to WordPress 3.2, try this handy little plugin written by Ryan Duff called WordPress Requirements Check

  1. Check if your web-host is running any version 5 of PHP or MySQL. If they are you can enable PHP5 by using this handy htaccess trick
  2. If not, then you can request from your webhost that they enable the latest versions of PHP and MySQL for you
  3. Else, look at alternative hosting. My suggestion would be a Clook hosting account. I really rate them for offering what you need. No fuss.

There we go. Don’t sweat it and take your time. Make sure you do things right.

To be more precise it is the way 1and1 (oneandone) handles or parses php files (more…)
